Annapurna Circuit: The Ultimate Trekking Experience in Nepal
The Annapurna Circuit is frequently voted one of the world's top trekking routes — and
for good reason. This 160-km loop around the Annapurna massif offers an extraordinary
diversity of landscapes, cultures, and altitudes.
**The Route**
Starting in Besisahar and finishing in Nayapul (or vice-versa), the circuit takes 12–21
days depending on your pace. The highlight is crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), the
highest point of the trek and one of the highest trekking passes in the world.
**Landscape Diversity**
The trek transitions through seven different climate zones — from lowland subtropical
jungle with terraced rice fields to arid high-altitude desert reminiscent of Tibet.
You'll pass through lush rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and wind-swept plains.
**Cultural Encounters**
The circuit passes through numerous ethnic communities: Gurung, Magar, Manang,
and Mustangi villages. Each has its own architecture, cuisine, festivals, and traditions.
The ancient trading post of Manang (3,519 m) is a particularly rich cultural stop.
**Practical Tips**
- Carry cash — ATMs are limited beyond Chame
- Book teahouses in advance during peak season (Oct–Nov)
- The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) costs NPR 3,000
- Side trips to Tilicho Lake (4,919 m) and Ice Lake add significant value
The Annapurna Circuit remains an unmissable Himalayan adventure.
