The Journey

Overview

Do you think the Tsum Valley with the Manaslu Circuit Trek is just for climbing high mountain passes and trekking? If yes, then you are wrong, as this journey is deeply rich in sacred Tibetan Buddhist heritage, ancient monks and monastery traditions, centuries of peaceful valley culture called the Ethos of Shyagya, and the unique heritage of the indigenous Tsumba people. Also, the combination of raw wilderness, rich culture of Tibetan Buddhism, crossing of Larkya La Pass at 5160 meters, close-up view of Mount Manaslu (8163 m)—the world’s 8th highest peak, and journey through the restricted area of Manaslu Conservation Area (MCA). This 23-day adventure takes you through restricted areas of the Manaslu region, where ancient Tibetan Buddhist traditions, traditional mountain villages, untouched landscapes, and diverse Himalayan ecosystems come together. The journey begins from Soti Khola after driving from Kathmandu and follows the Budhi Gandaki River through deep gorges, bridges, terraced farmlands, traditional villages, and subtropical forests. As the trail climbs higher, the landscape changes from green valleys to alpine environments, offering views of some of Nepal’s most impressive mountains, including Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), the world’s eighth-highest mountain. The first major section of the trek explores the sacred Tsum Valley, also known as the hidden valley of happiness, Beyul Kyimolung. This remote valley is home to the indigenous Tsumba people, who have preserved their Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient traditions, and peaceful village lifestyle for centuries. Walking through villages such as Chumling, Chhekampar, and Nile, trekkers experience traditional stone houses, prayer walls, monasteries, and the unique spiritual heritage of the region. The Tsum Valley section offers opportunities to explore important Buddhist sites, including Mu Gompa (3,700 m), the largest and highest monastery in the valley; Rachen Gompa; and Dhephu Doma Gompa. These monasteries reflect the deep connection between the local communities and Tibetan Buddhism. The valley also provides spectacular mountain views, including Ganesh Himal and Sringi Himal, along with a peaceful environment far from crowded trekking routes. After exploring Tsum Valley, the trek reconnects with the Manaslu Circuit, continuing through the traditional villages of the Nubri Valley, including Deng, Namrung, Lho, and Samagaon. These villages showcase Tibetan-influenced architecture, Buddhist monasteries, mani walls, and the traditional lifestyle of mountain communities. The trail gradually climbs towards the high Himalayan landscape, where trekkers can enjoy close views of Mt. Manaslu, Manaslu North, Ngadi Chuli, Himlung Himal, and other surrounding peaks. A major highlight of the trek is crossing the challenging Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), the highest point of the journey. The pass offers spectacular views of snow-covered mountains, glaciers, and alpine landscapes before descending towards Bimthang and the lower valleys. The trail then continues through rhododendron forests, traditional Gurung villages, and scenic mountain landscapes before ending at Dharapani, followed by a drive back to Kathmandu. The Manaslu Conservation Area protects a wide range of Himalayan biodiversity along this route. The trek passes through different vegetation zones, including Sal forests, pine forests, oak forests, rhododendron forests, juniper shrubs, and alpine vegetation. The region is home to wildlife such as blue sheep (Bharal), Himalayan tahr, musk deer, Himalayan langur, and pika. It is also a habitat area for the rare snow leopard. Bird species found in the region include the Himalayan monal (Danphe), golden eagle, lammergeier, Tibetan snowcock, and red-billed chough. The Tsum Valley, with the Manaslu Circuit Trek, is suitable for trekkers seeking a blend of Himalayan adventure, cultural exploration, and natural beauty. With gradual altitude gain, acclimatization days in Chhekampar and Samagaon, and proper preparation, this trek offers a complete experience of Nepal’s remote mountain landscapes, Tibetan Buddhist heritage, and the authentic lifestyles of Himalayan communities.
